Toronto cops accused killer makes brief court appearance
Article content A 31-year-old man accused of killing a Toronto Police officer over the summer made a brief court appearance Friday.
Article contentUmar Zameer is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly running down and killing Const. Jeff Northrup with a vehicle in City Hall’s underground parking lot on July 2.
Northrup and his partner were in the lot responding to a robbery call and were in plain clothes that evening.
Zameer’s lawyer, Nadar Hasan, asked the court Friday for an extension on the case because the defence was still waiting for disclosure.
Hasen addressed the court via zoom.
There were no words from Zameer, who was released Sept. 22 on $335,000 bail, which sparked outrage in the city as those charged with first-degree murder don’t typically get bail as an option.
Zameer is under house arrest and living with his sister.
Northrup, a 31-year veteran cop, lived in Brampton with his wife and three children.
Zameer is scheduled to appear next in old City Hall court on Oct. 29.
